CityMash.com–Vancouver comes in first for population health and healthy lifestyle on the Conference Board of Canada’s City Health Monitor.
While ranking 6th overall on the list of 10 top Canadian cities, Vancouver earned top marks in population health thanks to low rates of asthma and heart disease. There are also a low number of residents that have been diagnosed with diabetes or mood disorders.
Living up to the outdoorsy reputation Vancouver took top place in the healthy lifestyle category, which means most residents are physically active and have a low body weight.
“Vancouver residents are leading healthier lifestyles than any other metropolitan area, specifically when it comes to maintaining high levels of physical activity,” Louis Thériault, Vice-President, Public Policy said in a press release.
“However, perceived life satisfaction and indicators of access to health care play a role in dragging down the city’s overall health ranking.”
Saskatoon, Calgary and Winnipeg were the top three on the list while Montreal ranked last.
Each city has been rated using 24 indicators in categories such as life satisfaction, population health, healthy lifestyle and access to healthcare services.
