The 5 Best Places to Have Poke in Vancouver

Posted on December 20, 2016

CityMash.com - It’s no surprise that Vancouverites have jumped on the train of the latest food trend to hit our streets: poke. For the uninitiated, poke (pronounced poh-kay) is a raw fish salad that can be customized with different types of fish, seasonings, vegetables, fruit, grains and anything else you can think of.

While poke may be a new player on the Vancouver food scene, it’s been a staple in Hawaii forever. Poke is healthy, completely customizable and the perfect vessel for fresh seafood – it’s no wonder Vancouverites can’t get enough!

Check out five of the best places in Vancouver to say okay to poke!

Westcoast Poke

Westcoast Poke is one of the newest poke restaurants in Vancouver and already it has become an instant hit. Located at 8th and Cambie, this popular eatery is quickly becoming well-known for its superb service, fresh fish and delicious homemade sauces. We love that not only can you build your own poke bowl by picking the base, protein, toppings, seasoning and crunch, but you can also customize the size to suit your appetite.

The Poke Guy

If it’s quality fish you care about, head to The Poke Guy at Richards and Hastings. All of the fish served at The Poke Guy is wild caught, not farmed, and Ocean Wise certified. In fact, The Poke Guy is Canada’s first and only restaurant to serve sustainable Ocean Wise seafood. They’re so committed to only serving the best and freshest fish that they close early (5:00pm or until sold out) in order to not leave their seafood out all day. So get there before it’s gone!

Poke Time

Poke Time, located on Robson Street in downtown Vancouver, has the distinction of being Vancouver’s first official poke shop! They brought the Hawaiian specialty to Vancouver and added their own signature twist. For example, instead of enjoying your poke toppings on a bed of salad or rice, why not try them on top of nacho chips? If you love it, Poke Time also offers catering services so you can get the whole office involved and as into poke as you are.

Pokerrito

In the heart of downtown at Dunsmuir and Seymour you’ll find the wildly popular Pokerrito. As evidenced by their name, Pokerrito’s claim to fame is combining two of the most popular foods in Vancouver: poke and burritos. Enjoy your raw fish salad wrapped up tight with white rice in a seaweed wrap – a pokerrito or extra long sushi roll, depending how you look at it. Either way, these tasty creations are perfect for a quick healthy and delicious meal on the go.

Pacific Poke

Pacific Poke is all about bold flavours, fresh seafood and innovation. Located at Main and Keefer, Pacific Poke features unique toppings like fresh wasabi peas, avocado nori and lime yuzu sauce. They also serve poke paninis, if you want to enjoy your poke in a sandwich form. Don’t forget to add a delicious homemade strawberry green tea or yuzu lemonade to accompany your meal!

We are officially poke obsessed! What poke place is your favourite? Do you have a favourite combination of mix-ins and toppings?
