The Most Anticipated Movies of 2017

Posted on January 2, 2017 - 2016 proved moviegoers are growing weary of superhero flicks due to a dip in ticket sales and even fan approval; exemplified with releases like Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.

Legendary directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have both speculated 2017 will be the beginning of the end for blockbusters, kicking off a crash that may bankrupt studios who have invested so much cash in these “tent pole” movies.

With that being said, there are a number of pictures that have sparked interest whether it’s part of an existing series or features a prominent name attached. If you’re a cinema buff or an occasional viewer, here’s what’s creating buzz:

Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy became a surprising fresh and funny eighties inspired megahit in 2014 – there was no doubt for a second a sequel would follow. Volume II furthers Star-Lord’s origins alongside the entire original cast.

Spiderman: Homecoming

Spiderman: Homecoming is the newest reboot of the series with Tom Holland taking over the titular role. The bad guy in this version? Batman’s own Michael Keaton dawning wings to play the Vulture.

Logan is the third and final stand alone Wolverine movie. This will be the final time we see Hugh Jackman as the infamous X-Men. The biggest buzz around this release? It’s following Deadpool’s footsteps by earning an R rating.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman has been long awaited since the infamous TV show and apparently has been in development for over twenty years. Gal Gadot finally brings Diana Prince to life in the Patti Jenkins directed origin story.

Alien: Covenant

No, we didn’t travel back in time, but two of Ridley Scott’s biggest films are expanding this year. Alien: Covenant continues the legendary director’s prequel series after Prometheus.

Blade Runner 2049

Dennis Villeneuve helms Blade Runner 2049 which has Harrison Ford playing Rick Deckard for the first time in thirty-four years.

Beauty and the Beast

Disney has become known almost exclusively now for its live action remakes of classic animated movies. Beauty and the Beast comes to life 2017 with Harry Potter’s Emma Watson playing Belle.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

The fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies entitled Dead men Tell No Tales reunites Jack Sparrow with Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner in a hunt for Poseidon’s trident. Joining the cast this go-round is Oscar winner Javier Bardem and the always engaging Geoffrey Rush.

War for the Planet of the Apes

The third Ape movie, War for the Planet of the Apes continues the new saga with a star studded cast including Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn where the two species embark on an anticipated bloody battle.

The Fate of the Furious

The Fate of the Furious is the eighth movie in the series, following the highly acclaimed and attended Paul Walker finale two years prior. Charlize Theron joins the cast as the femme fatal here.

The Great Wall

The Great Wall is a bit of a mysterious gamble but the trailer reaction has certainly gained overwhelming interest. Staring Matt Damon, the history of China’s most famous landmark is told with a sprawling monster legend used as the mythical catalyst on why it was built.

Christopher Nolan may be one of the most respected modern directors. Here, he tells the true story of the brutal WWII attack using usual suspects Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy in Dunkirk.

Downsizing is the latest from independent comedy drama filmmaker Alexander Payne, featuring Matt Damon as a man who shrinks to one eighth his size. The incredible cast alone is reason enough to see it, featuring Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Christoph Waltz, Alec Baldwin, and Neil Patrick Harris.

Suburbicon will likely sweep the Oscars next season going solely off the crew. Directed by George Clooney and written by him and the Coen brothers, it sounds like a Fargo-esque crime caper set in the fifties. It also stars Matt Damon who seems to be the winner of 2017 anticipated movies thus far.

The Mummy

The ringer for star returns is most excitingly Tom Cruise who takes a break from Mission Impossible and headlines a special effects heavy reboot of The Mummy.

Star Wars Episode VIII

Everyone can’t wait for Star Wars Episode VIII, the eighth official installment that follows the Force Awakens and 2016’s spinoff Rogue One. While we only got a two second glimpse of Luke Skywalker in 2015, here we are touted to get a whole movie based on his history and future. Expanding on the brilliant new cast, Rian Johnson directs this highly anticipated sequel coming next Christmas.
