B.C.’s Most Popular Baby Names in 2015

Posted on January 3, 2017

CityMash.com - Canada’s Vital Statistics Agency recently released its list of the top baby names in British Columbia for 2015, and a number of recent favorites have remained at the top of the list.

Oliver took the crown for the first time among boys names, while Emma narrowly beat out 2014 champ Olivia for first among girls.

Oliver was followed by Ethan, Liam, Benjamin and Lucas, while Emily, Sophia and Ava rounded out the top five for the girls.

However, when alternative spellings of names are included, Jackson (and it’s variants) takes the top spot for boys, while Amelia (and it’s variants) slips into the top five for girls.

BabyCenter.ca also keeps a record of baby names reported by users of its website and has provided some updated (though unofficial) names for 2016 through its website.

BabyCenter.ca lists the top boys names for 2016 as, from one to five, Liam, Noah, Lucas, Oliver, and Benjamin, showing some overlap with the official figures from 2015. The website’s girl names for 2016 are likewise similar: Sophia, Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, and Ava.

In total there were 44,405 babies reportedly born in B.C. in 2015, including 22,819 boys and 21,586 girls. For more information, visit the provincial government’s website here.
