CityMash.com - Have you ever noticed the serious amount of hustle that goes on from Monday-Friday in Vancouver? I’ve come to the recent realization that Vancouverites are incredibly hard workers, in fact, maybe I’d venture to say that Vancouverites just may be workaholics. Here are a few reasons I think that might be the case:
Let’s cut right to the chase: there is a ton of money in this city. Vancouver is filled with successful individuals who have the wallet to prove it. Of course, not everyone is rolling in dough, but I think it’s safe to say that there are plenty of people who live in excess. Not only is there money in Vancouver, there is visible money. Sports cars, mansions, Gucci, Louboutin, the works. Being surrounded by these things day to day can serve as quite a motivator when it comes to hard work. The incredible overload of visible money is, to me, a factor in the insane work ethic of Vancouver’s residents.
Another factor, the most obvious factor, is the ridiculously high cost of living. Weather you’re a renter or a homeowner, the roof over your head is probably costing you a pretty penny. Therefore, not working hard isn’t much of an option unless you’ve got some family money to fall back on, or you plan on winning the lottery like me! It’s sad but it’s the truth, Vancouver is one expensive city; but we’re all still here so it must be worth it, right?
The next factor, and one of the larger ones in my opinion is something I like to refer to as the “Grass is Greener Complex.” This complex is constantly thinking there is always something better out there and not being able to settle into your current situation. I find this feeling is elevated in Vancouver because there is so much opportunity!
There are many well-established companies which were started and have grown substantially in Vancouver. There is also a plethora of startups to get involved with. Because there are countless wonderful businesses, amazing ideas, and inspirational people, it’s pretty impossible to feel like you’re doing enough. When new concepts and revolutionary businesses are emerging with such frequency, all we can hope for is to get on board or do the same ourselves. For this reason, we overload ourselves, work constantly, network when we’re not at work, and talk about career constantly. I think it’s absolutely amazing to be surrounded by such inspiring people and businesses in Vancouver, but I also think we mustn’t take it as a testament to our current situations. Being inspired is one thing, but being inspired to a point of anxiety about your life is less than ideal.
So, Vancouverites, keep networking, keeping drawing inspiration from all of the outstanding individuals around you, keep working hard; but also, work hard to find peace in the place you are right now. Congratulate others on their success, but do the same for yourself! Something as small as crossing something off your to-do list should be enough to make you feel a little pride, so enjoy it.
Like I said, this city is overflowing with phenomenal people, so count yourself lucky rather than feeling down on yourself. So, are Vancouverites workaholics? Big time. Let’s embrace the passion instead of letting it overwhelm us!
