CityMash.com - It’s certainly no secret that Vancouver is home to some incredible startups! We’re not sure what it is about this city, but there are constantly innovative new ideas, products, and solutions being thought up for us to utilize and enjoy.
Most recently, ChopValue. ChopValue is a company which recycles used chopsticks and turns them into stunning furniture. Their pieces are sleek, creative, and positively beautiful!
Vancouver is bursting at the seams with Asian cuisine (not that we’re complaining), in fact, over 2000 Vancouver restaurants use chopsticks. Most of these 2000 restaurants use disposable chopsticks which are sadly ending up in landfills.
To be exact, Vancouver sends over 100,000 disposable chopsticks to landfills every single day. How crazy is that!? Luckily, ChopValue’s founder Felix Böck, PhD candidate in UBC’s faculty of forestry, noted this issue and took a massive step in the right direction.
The ChopValue team is built up of designers, carpenters, and builders who put together these beautiful pieces. They are driven by “the motivation and passion to add value to under-utilized urban waste resources” as well as teaching others about how to do so too!
If you or someone you know owns a restaurant using disposable chopsticks, you should encourage them to check out ChopValue! Why not reduce your waste costs, help the environment, and contribute to this awesome business’ building materials?
Our #upcycle story: ChopValue recycles chopsticks for value added design products. Our innovation started with a collection program. The benefits? 100% free, save on garbage tipping fees while being environmentally friendly. • Once the #chopsticks are brought to our shop, they are dry cleaned & aligned into one uniform direction. The production process starts with a glue application, with a water-based resin (low emissions). The chopsticks are then dried, to get rid of the moisture and fed into a hot-press with a significant amount of #heat & pressure that eliminates any bacteria that would remain on the #product. • ChopValue, with the help of our #partners has upcycled over 1.5 million chopsticks since July 2016. The table shown above required about 3200 chopsticks to build. #UPCYCLEWIN
ChopValue is the perfect example of seeing a problem and making a change. Who knew something as small and specific as disposable chopsticks could amount to so much waste?
We love this idea, their products, and the business as a whole. Way to go, ChopValue, you’re doing amazing things!
