CityMash.com - What is Galentine’s Day? Galentine’s Day is a holiday dedicated to celebrating the women in your life. The girlfriends, best friends, moms, cousins, aunts and coworkers who inspire you, lift you up and always know when to send an encouraging text or come over with a bottle of wine. Galentine’s Day is all about the awesome gals in our lives!
Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13th, the day before Valentine’s Day, and was invented by our favourite fictional lady, Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation. Leslie says Galentine’s Day is the best day of the year and we have to agree. A day that’s all about celebrating our favourite ladies? Yes, please!
This year, Galentine’s Day falls on BC’s Family Day, so there’s even more love and celebration to spread around. Plus, in the wake of the Women’s March, we can’t think of a better time to support our sisters and celebrate them. So take a page out of Leslie’s book and check out six ways you can ring in Galentine’s Day 2017:
Nothing says gal time better than brunch. Sure, it’s a little stereotypical, but there’s a reason everyone loves brunch – it’s delicious! Since Galentine’s falls on a long weekend, there might be some long lines at your favourite brunch spot.
But that’s okay – it just means more time to hang out with your girlfriends. And since time passes so quickly when you’re hanging with your besties, you’ll be sipping mimosas and chowing down on waffles in no time.
Take a trip
What’s better than a road trip with your girls? Almost nothing! Just think of all the funny inside jokes that will be made and all the great group selfies that will be taken.
Traveling with friends is the best. If you have the time, take advantage of the long weekend and get away to Kelowna, Seattle or somewhere on Vancouver Island. But even if you just have the day, take a quick trip out to Deep Cove or drive a bit farther to Harrison Hot Springs.
Help make Galentine’s Day feel like a real holiday by exchanging gifts and cards with your favourite ladies. You know how disappointing it is to receive a boring box of chocolates or a sad bouquet of flowers on Valentine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day is the exact opposite because who knows how to buy you the best gifts? Your girls! Go crazy on Etsy and get your ladies adorable handmade cards, skincare products, beautiful home decor items or whatever is most them. You know your girlfriends best.
If your best ladies don’t live in Vancouver, that’s okay. Set up a Skype date to celebrate Galentine’s Day! The best part of Galentine’s Day is spending time with each other and Skype allows you to do that no matter where in the world you are.
So schedule a time to catch up with your best friend or maybe a female relative who lives far away. You can make it festive and each have a cake slice to eat together or surprise each other with an e-gift card to a favourite store.
Bring together your best ladies for a potluck meal where every person is responsible for a different dish. This is an awesome way to share the workload, admire each others’ skills and spend time bonding over a great meal.
Not a star in the kitchen? That’s okay! A potluck could always use some storebought drinks or maybe you can volunteer to organize a game or gift exchange instead of bringing a dish. You could even offer to host and decorate your place instead of burning something in the kitchen.
Go out dancing
Our best nights out dancing are always when we are with our favourite ladies. Leave your man at home, grab your girlfriends and hit the best place in town for a fun night on the dance floor.
With your best girls you can try out a hilarious dance move you saw online and get super excited when that Destiny’s Child song from high school comes on. Plus, when you go out dancing with your girlfriends you’ve always got company for the bathroom and someone to help rescue you if a guy tries to intrude on Ladies’ Night!
No matter what you plan to do for Galentine’s Day, make sure your ladies know how much they mean to you by taking the time to share your love, have fun and reflect together. Happy Galentine’s Day!
