13 Things to Do in Vancouver this Weekend – Feb 24-26, 2017

Posted on February 23, 2017 - What’s going on, Vancouver?

It’s the final weekend of February and rumour has it we are in for another snow dumping. Haven’t we had enough? We seriously can’t believe that we might see snow AGAIN. And they’re saying we might even get snow into March. Has Mother Nature forgotten that this is Vancouver and we don’t do snow?

Despite the incoming snow, there’s still lots to do this weekend. From comedy festivals to pet shows, there’s lots happening that you can do while staying warm and out of the cold. Check out 13 events happening around the city this weekend:

Check out a comedy show

Vancouver is lousy with comedy this weekend. So if you’re in the mood to laugh, you’re in luck. First of all, we have the end of the Just For Laughs NorthWest Festival. Catch big headliners Jim Gaffigan or Chris D’Elia on Friday night and Sarah Silverman on Saturday night.

Love “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” as much as we do? It was the improv TV show hosted by Drew Carey and then Aisha Tyler that we still can’t get enough of. Some of the original cast is coming to Vancouver for a few live improv shows entitled “Whose Live Anyway?” this weekend.

And lastly, there’s the Comedy for Critters event. On Sunday, head to Yuk Yuks for a comedy show where all the proceeds go towards the BC SPCA. Bonus: there will also be cupcakes for sale!

Dance along to Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal

Lover of modern dance? Check out Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal at the Vancouver Playhouse this Friday for performances by Brazilian, Greek and Israeli choreographers. Just don’t get any ideas about trying to join them on stage.

Watch movies at the Vancouver Badass Film Festival

Yup, this is a real thing. Check out the best in extreme film genres at the Vancouver Badass Film Festival this Sunday at the Rio Theatre. There will be four feature films and over 20 short films vying for 11 different awards. Check out a different type of film festival this weekend.

Get walking with Coldest Night of The Year Fundraisers

On February 25th, communities around Canada get together to raise money and awareness about homelessness on the coldest night of the year. Both Surrey and Vancouver will be hosting 2, 5 and 10 km walks to help support the cause.

Hang with puppies at the Vancouver Pet Lover Show

Calling all dog people! This weekend is the annual Vancouver Pet Lover Show in Abbotsford. There will be dog competitions, dancing dogs and even a search for the next star dog. So bring your pooch and cross your fingers that star dog is yours!

Cure your baby fever at the 2017 Birth Fair

Head to the 2017 Birth Fair for everything bumps, babies and beyond. This is the first fair of its kind in Vancouver where parents to-be can learn all about family planning and birthing options to get the best care for their little ones. Plus, all the proceeds go to the BC Women’s Hospital Foundation.

Become an interior designer at the BC Home & Garden Show

Can’t stop watching HGTV? Then you will love the BC Home & Garden Show happening this weekend at BC Place Stadium. This show has it all: cooking demonstrations, artisan workshops, Q&A with the experts and so many more exhibitors and vendors than you could imagine.

Commiserate with your fellow daters at Tinder Tales

Ever gone on a bad Tinder date? Don’t worry, these people will make you feel so much better about whatever awful date you went on. Check out Tinder Tales on Feb 24th at the Fox Cabaret to watch the group of comedians and amateur daters confess their most awful online dating stories.

Watch the Oscars at El Camino’s

Head to El Camino’s this Sunday to watch Hollywood’s hottest night. Enjoy drink specials, play Oscars bingo and don’t forget to dress to the nines because there will be a best dressed award. And the Academy Award goes to… hopefully you!

Shop till you drop at the Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring Pop Up!

Now this is a great way to finally say goodbye to winter: shopping! Head to the Little Mountain Shop this weekend for big sales on jewelry, decor, clothing and accessories by vendors such as Forage and Bloom, Make Merry Shop and The Littlest Fry.

Laugh at Shakespeare After Dark

Who knew the Bard could be so much fun? Check out Shakespeare After Dark this Saturday at the Havana on Commercial Drive for improvised scenes, drunk actors tackling Shakespeare and suggestions from the crowd. If you haven’t read a Shakespeare play since high school, you are in for a treat.

Battle of The Brush

We didn’t even know that live painting competitions were a thing but now we do, thanks to Battle of The Brush. This Friday at Heritage Hall, ten artists will battle it out for the grand prize of an art exhibition, cash prize and the coveted Golden Brush trophy. The audience decides who wins so make sure you’re there to cheer on your favourite!

Umbrella Self-Defense Workshop

As the Centre for Swordplay says, attend this workshop to learn how to fend off assailants with Vancouver’s most common weather-based accoutrement. Spend four hours on Sunday learning how to defend yourself using nothing more than that umbrella you’re touting around town.

Busy weekend indeed! What are you getting up to?
