Review: Brunch at Yolks

Posted on May 8, 2017

CityMash.com - Brunch has become an almost religious experience in Vancouver. You dress up, you go with your friends, you wait in long lines and you leave feeling incredibly satisfied with your morning. It’s pretty hard to go wrong with brunch in this city.

One place that is definitely doing brunch right is Yolks. With three locations in Vancouver (East Hastings, Broadway and Cambie, Burrard Street truck), Yolk’s Restaurant and Commissary is serving up some of the best on the Vancouver breakfast scene. And they do so much more than just eggs.

Yolks started with 36 seats in the former Brave Bull House of Steaks in East Vancouver sharing a kitchen with other famous eateries like Taqueria and Tacofino. Once word got out about the new brunch joint and lines started winding around the block, Yolks expanded to 80 seats. But that was just the beginning.

In 2014, Yolks partnered with Street Meet to open a breakfast food truck in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Heading to the office and don’t have time for a bowl of cereal?

Pick up an order of poached eggs from the Yolks truck at Burrard and West Pender. The truck can also be hired to serve breakfast food at your event, office or wedding.

And then in 2015, Yolks opened another restaurant at Broadway and Cambie featuring breakfast burritos and a new smoothie and juice menu. Like its sister establishments, the Mount Pleasant location is just as packed and popular as the original Yolks in East Van.

So what makes Yolks so good?

First of all, it’s totally customizable. These are not your grandma’s poached eggs. You can choose from the usual toppings like bacon, ham and arugula or get fancy with portobello mushrooms, goat cheese, smoked salmon and duck confit.

Next comes the toppings: do you want real hollandaise sauce or aged white cheddar? Lastly, you’ll need to pick your base of either an English muffin, truffle lemon hashbrowns or a gluten-free bun.

If you’re not a huge fan of eggs, no problem! Yolks has lots of non-yolk options to discover. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Yolks serves up pancakes, French toast and beignets with a wide assortment of sides and toppings.

Prefer something light and healthy? Yolks has organic oatmeal or honey toasted granola for you to indulge in. And if you’re not too worried about choosing something healthy, let us recommend the mouthwatering chicken and waffles!

And to top it all off, Yolks boasts an impressive drink menu with smoothies, fresh juices, hot and cold cocktails, coffees, teas, beers and more.

We love the crisp fresh pressed apple juice and creamy house made iced Callebaut chocolate milk. Of course, you can never go wrong with a round of mimosas or Caesars either!

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate. The perfect after playing/walking/working in the snow fix.
